Track the usage of a new feature with your SQL data

Track the usage of a new feature after it was released.

What do I get out of it?

A best practice in product management is to analyze the usage of a new feature after it was released. With Actiondesk, distinguish successful features from failures and improve the way you manage your product priorization.

You can answer the following questions:

- How often was the feature used each day since it was released?

- Who are the users using it?

How does it work?

Let's assume you have an "Events" table with the following properties: event_name, timestamp and user_id.

Let's also assume you want to track the usage of the new feature "Add emoji to sheet" (yes, this might be a real life use case 🙃).

We're going to count the total number of times this features was used, and the total number of users who used it.

  1. Import the table "Events" in an Actiondesk sheet Call this sheet "Events".
  2. Create a new sheet called "Add emoji feature analysis" (don't forget to add an emoji to your sheet name 🤓).
  3. In the row 2, starting in C2, write the days for which you want to have the data: "10/26/2020" ; "10/27/2020" ; "10/28/2020" ; etc .
  4. In B3, write "# of features usages" and in B4 "# of users who used the feature".
  5. In C3, write the formula =COUNTIFS(Events!#event_name, "Add emoji to sheet", Events!#timestamp, C2). Copy and paste on the right.
  6. In C4, write the formula =COUNTUNIQUEIFS(Events!#user_id, Events!#event_name, "Add emoji to sheet", Events!#timestamp, C2). Copy and paste on the right. This will count the number of unique user_id having used the features, so the number of unique users.

Et voilà!
